World Music: Klezmatics, "Man in a Hat"
(USA) New York's "Klezmatics" is one of the first wave of klezmer music revival groups, and a hard driving, exciting band by any standards. "Man in a Hat" is a song with two identities; first off, it's a rousing Bulgar, (a Jewish wedding dance) and secondly it is a deliciously sly "patter song" with words by author David Lindsay, who was also the first bass player with the band. Who can resist lines like: "say farewell to Finland, further inland than old Thor?" the celebratory and devotional music of the Jews of Eastern Europe prior to the Holocaust, continued by the surviving generations in the USA and Europe.
