World Music: Staff Benda Bilili , "Je T'Aime"
(Congo) A few years ago Link TV presented the wonderful documentary "Jupiter's Dance," about the street music in Kinshasa, Congo. One of the highlights of the film was a band of ragged paraplegics in makeshift tricycles who made sweet, swinging music. The band has come a long way since then, and with good reason-- they ROCK. Most recently Staff Benda Bilili won the WOMEX award for Best New Band, and when they took the stage and started to play, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. In this video of the band live, you will also see the young man Roger Landu who joined the band as an abandoned street child (Benda Bilili has protected many street children) and created the instrument he solos with out of wood, a string and a can.
