"Chemical Ali" is Executed; Airliner Down in Beirut

(Al Jazeera English News Headlines: January 25, 2010) Saddam Hussein's right-hand man, Ali Hassan al-Majid, otherwise known as "Chemical Ali", has been executed in Iraq for atrocities committed under his rule. Also on Monday, Baghdad was rocked by multiple, apparently coordinated bomb attacks outside of major hotels. In Lebanon, an Ethiopian airliner crashed shortly after takeoff into the Mediterranean Sea. Signaling a change in tactics, General Stanley McChrystal, head of NATO military operations against the Taliban in Afghanistan, called for a political solution and an end to fighting there. An international conference on aid to Haiti is taking place in Montreal, Canada. Meanwhile, Haitian authorities are offering free transport to thousands trying to flee the capital Port-au-Prince.
