World Music: El Hadj N'Diaye, "Thiaroye"
(Senegal) El Hadj N'Diaye is a unique voice in Senegalese music, putting the focus on politically conscious lyrics that have occasionally landed him in hot water. In "Thiaroye" he reminisces about the Dakar neighborhood he grew up in - and in which he sold Cola Nuts on the street, as a child. The song is about the plight of the immigrant, who must live in a land far from the familiar things that have previously given life meaning. The video juxtaposes images of the Paris Metro with footage of the markets of Thiaroye, and indeed, "the land of the white man is far away" in more than miles.
