World Music: Ze Manel, "Africa Unite"
(Guinea-Bissau) Ze Manel Fortes has been a political musician from the get-go. When Guinea-Bissao gained its independence from Portugal, the country fell prey to massive corruption. Ze Manel had formed its most popular band, "Super Mama Djombo" and he fearlessly decried the situation - so much so that the government paid for a scholarship to get him out of the country. Ending up in the USA, he has continued to perform songs that are critical of the Guinea-Bissao government and African governments in general. This video which documents Ze Manel's return to his homeland after an exile of twenty years, was shot on location in Portugal and Guinea-Bissao and finished in the USA.
