World Music: Los Santiaguinos, "En Iquique Se Enfrentaron"
(Chile) Here's a rousing performance of a Cueca, the Chilean national dance. It's a wonderful rhythm, said to be a descendent of the Spanish fandango with native and African elements. The singing is full throated and passionate and the lyric recalls a heroic historic event. Los Santiguinos have made their reputation playing "Cuenca Urbana" which incorporates urban folklore into the Cuenca repertoire. Our only regret is that the song is over just as we start to really get into it!
