World Music: Frifot, "Mikel Pur/Kus Erik"
(Sweden) All of the members of Frifot hold a deep and respected place in the Swedish pantheon of folk stars. Lena Willemark and Ale Möller may be best known for their CD "Nordan" on the ECM label, which sent a frison through the world music community when it was first released. But Möller acquired a major reputation much earlier, as a man who had fallen in love with Greek bouzouki music, only to return to his Swedish heritage, re-emerging with a fresh and inventive original sound that uses a modified mandola (Octave mandolin). Per Gudmundsen is skilled with both the fiddle and the bagpipes (yes, there are Swedish bagpipes!) and his album "Sackpipa" is considered to be one of the finest demonstrations of local pipe artistry. Lena Willemark was raised in the deep country of Sweden, and her pure and true voice is a wonderful instrument for both traditional and improvised song. As you can see, she's a fine fiddler in her own right, too.
