World Music: Bidaia, "Oihan"
(Spain/Basque) This gorgeous entry is by Bidaia, a young band, formed by American Caroline Phillips (who fell in love with Basque culture, and subsequently learned the language and to play the hurdy gurdy) and Mixel Ducau. They had been a duo for five years before they decided to put together a band, and added Ritxi Salaberria on upright bass and Jabi Area on percussion. "Oihan" is a mesmerizing traditional song, about the human need for love, and the search for it. Beyond that, it is a sonic treat, with the resonances of the flute and hurdy-gurdy adding a pleasing and ancient sounding setting for Phillip's rich soprano voice" The beating of a heart... means nothing if it has no one to love.
