World Music: Joaquin Sabina, "Por El Bulevar De Los Sueños Rotos"
(Spain) Where to begin with this multi-level video...? It's full of Spanish and Mexican iconography, from the firing squad that echoes Goya's "3rd of May" (or Manet's "Execution of the 'Emperor Maximilian") to the black and white sequences that reference early Mexican cinema. Sabina was born in Spain under the reign of Franco, and experienced its malevolence first hand. He has had remarkable success on both sides of the ocean, and in this song he pays tribute to Costa Rica-born, Mexican-based Chavela Vargas (who makes a brief appearance at the end.) Vargas herself is a legend; living on the edge, she dressed in men's clothes, carried a gun and openly courted women (she had a love affair with Frida Kahlo.) She is still singing, well into her eighties.
