World Music: Varttina, "Riena"
(Finland) It's been a long and varied road for this Finnish band. Starting in 1983 as a group of youngsters getting together to sing and play folk music, they most recently collaborated on the score of the theatrical production of "The Lord of the Rings." This video is from a performance the band gave at MIDEM 2006 in Cannes, and captures the tight playing of the backup band and dynamic singing of the three ladies up front. Appropriately, as Johanna Virtannen explains, this song is about a very powerful woman who brooks no betrayal, and exacts a strong revenge. As Finnish men are wont to say "Don't mess with Finnish women!"
