World Music: Rachid Taha, "Rock El Casbah"
(France/Algeria) Rachid Taha's music has been called Rock n' Raï, although he himself might call it Algerian R&B. However one chooses to try to define this artist, one will always be doomed to leaving out some element that completes the picture. Starting his career with the band "Carte De Sejours," and continuing on with covers of classic Raï tunes ("Ya Rayah" is an evergreen Taha favorite) he went on to partner with producer Steve Hillage and it's been a winning combination ever since. His shows are rocked out, sweaty raves - no wonder he has chosen to cover the Clash's "Rock the Casbah" a tune by one of his favorite bands, both musically and politically. This video catches Taha in fine form - from gravel throated singing to on the edge antics.
