Haiti: Mangrove Protection
50 years ago the mangrove forests on Haiti's north coast, critical to the preservation and survival of sea life, were destroyed almost completely for charcoal use. Mangroves act as a natural barrier that protects small marine life, providing a safe nesting area, and also creates a feeding ground for larger fish. Today, the groves are slowly making a comeback, thanks to a local environment group, Village Planete, and funding from USAID.
