World Music: Martirio, "Si Te Contara"
(Spain) In May of 2006, the performer known as Martirio visited New York and recorded a series of ballads using superb jazz sidemen. "Si Te Contara" is a classic bolero by Félix Reina, that has been recorded by a plethora of Latin greats: Willie Colon, Ibrahim Ferrer, Tito Puente, to name a few. Past arrangements have been lush, big band affairs. But Martirio gives the song an intimate, yet emotional interpretation that contrasts beautifully with the coolly intellectual playing of bassist George Mraz, reflecting the dark lyric "If you knew about my suffering... the sad story of sorrow and pain that... fills my soul night after night... would you care?" The video was directed by Fernando Trueba who obviously enjoyed working with the artist whose trademark sunglasses never come off.
