World Music: NasJota featuring Cheb Yacine & Messiah, "B Sotak (With Your Vote)"
(Sudan/USA) The ballots have not been tallied as of this writing, but Sudan is going through the process of nationwide, multi-party elections for the first time in 24 years. There has been music coming out of this event, and "B Sotak" is one such example. It's an appeal for unity and participation in 3 different languages: Arabic, English and Dinka. As the producer E-Hab Abasaeed expressed to me, an entire generation of Sudanese has grown up with no concept of democracy, and the goal of "B Sotak" was to engage the youth of the country with a sense of empowerment. The video itself was shot in the USA and Sudan, and the various performers all wrote their own parts.
Be on the lookout for the Sudanese B-girl, too!

Lyrics:
Hook
Protect her with your Vote
our beloved Country
bypass your silence
Let her live
1st Arabic Verse
I wanted to do something to find my self as a leader
an army of words banging in the ears and passing by
can't find myself in anything that I do
Be a Knight to your country , build and hold her hands
let the question among us be " who bring this to us"
our country was targeted and our enemy was lost between our loved ones
You are High like a sky scraper
you are bigger than a flag flapping in the far sky
our Sudan is one but our hearts have a thousand obstacles in their way
you want the truth
they are people digging underneath and their hands are buried
and we in reality struggling but we are patient
a thousand words passed us by
you want to know the summary
dogs running after their master
English Verse
Who's soon to lead the sudanese human needs?
Food to feed, schools to read Student fees
No mute vocals, we need voices
Guide and protect the local resources
oval office, heads of parliament
Largest country in largest continent
No more conflicts; think who, when, how
We need sponsorships, from the UN now or
responsiveness from you in power
Consciousness, turn the music louder
Light skin sudanese or darker face
equal opportunity in the market place
We need a parking space, reserved like you
Gods grace we deserve like you
Unite, despite the lines of division
Race, class, tribes and religion
Langalafa verse
Election is coming for us, you just vote
For the one that you want for Sudan, don't be afraid
We just want the one who is going to stand for all Sudan
That proves we love our country
That proves we are at peace
Our land is beautiful we have to develop it together
I love my country, you love your country
Together we are going to vote for Sudan
Others want that or they don't
You just vote for your freedom
