COP17 Daily Report - December 7, 2011

In the final days of the UN climate talks in Durban, South Africa, environment ministers and heads of state have taken the lead on negotiations inside plenary walls, as local youth take to the beach to deliver a strong symbolic message. OneClimate talks to Paul Horseman, Global Campaign for Climate Action, and artist John Quigley about the concept behind their giant human lion mural in sending the message that the future of South Africa's youth is in limbo with these talks.

The US is pushing for a new treaty that would come into effect after 2020, but science tells us that this would be too late to keep global temperatures rise below 2 degrees celsius -- what's needed in preventing catastrophic climate change. The EU is proposing a treaty that would come into effect by 2015. Small island states are calling for something even sooner. Will a compromise be reached?
