Dave Matthews - Supporting Veterans
Joshua Kors, a reporter for The Nation and contributor to ABC News, has spent a year investigating how the military is falsely diagnosing wounded Iraq veterans with "personality disorders," preventing them from collecting disability and medical benefits. In his Nation cover story, "How Specialist Town Lost His Benefits," Kors looked at the case of Specialist Jon Town, a 28-year-old Army veteran who was injured during a rocket attack in Ramadi, Iraq, then denied benefits after the Army claimed his wounds were the result of "personality disorder."
The controversy surrounding the war in the Middle East and its victims has been at the centre of media attention since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. But it’s only been in recent months that another, pressing aspect of this conflict has begun receiving the attention it desperately needs – the difficulties faced by soldiers returning home in need of treatment.
Some of these soldiers are being denied the care they need. Allegations are circulating that the Army has been discharging service members for "personality disorder" as a means to deny them benefits and treatment from the VA.
Musician Dave Matthews has been an active supporter of veterans' rights and recently sponsored a petition supporting this cause. If you signed the petition from this page, thank you!
Supporting our troops doesn’t stop with a bumper sticker and a rally. Veterans need the support of VA hospitals and clinics, at a time when military victims of earlier wars are also registering for VA health care. An issue like veteran care requires a long term and ongoing commitment, even after the war has ended. Link TV aims to keep VA care in the foreground through videos, links to organizations that are helping, and by supporting the work of journalists who are keeping this issue alive. Please check out the links on the left to find out how you can support veterans.
