Dr. Lea Rekow is director of Green My Favela, an urban restoration project based in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Rekow is an advising consultant to the sustainable development action network GlobalCAD; an advisor to the Integrated Media program at Cal Arts; a special envoy of Open & Agile Smart Cities (OASC); a member of the Institute for Australian Geographers; and a member of New York Women in Film and Television. Her work focuses on creative, transdisciplinary practices in areas suffering under extreme socio-economic and environmental stress. She has worked extensively with ethnic minorities in Burma, on land use reclamation projects on the Navajo Nation, and on large-scale urban gardening projects in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas.

In Rio de Janeiro, urban gardens have created social areas for safe and therapeutic respite, and small clusters of organic agricultural production that provide many local families with food and access to medicinal herbs on a daily basis.
