Different Approaches to Improving Access to Healthy Food Options

Los Angeles is a city of abundance, yet nutritious food is hard to find in low-income neighborhoods. Roy visits the largest organic produce warehouse in Los Angeles with Olympia Auset of SÜPRMARKT, where she finds contents for her clients’ produce boxes. While Auset is in the early stages of her journey to nourish people, Earl’s, a restaurant in the Crenshaw District, has been working with customers to make healthier choices for more than 30 years. What started as a hot dog cart for owners Cary and Duane Earl, has expanded into a brick-and-mortar hub for plant-based fare and healthy options for a community often battling diabetes and other diet-related diseases.

Roy journeys from L.A. to Orange County to discover how two non-profit innovators are tackling the problem of food waste. Roy visits Robert Egger, whose project LA Kitchen is simultaneously aggregating wasted food, using it to cook fresh meals for those in need, and providing workforce training. Roy also follows Bill Bracken of Bracken’s Kitchen, who partners with Chefs to End Hunger to reuse leftover food and distribute it with his food truck in Orange County.
