Yet, what has been truly tremendous in the year since the hurricane is the will of Puerto Ricans building, organizing, and recovering on the island. Puerto Ricans have worked to find solutions that are long term and lead the island away from disaster capitalism, providing examples that will be important as climate crises continue to impact the country. In 2018, as Hurricane Florence hits the Carolinas, examples of people-powered survival socialism are critical to responding to crises causes by extraction and environmental devastation.
