Lives at Stake: Saving Health Insurance for People Living with HIV in Louisiana
When three major health insurance companies announced they would no longer provide coverage for lower-income people living with HIV in Louisiana, John East and Lambda Legal fought back — and won.
East had his health insurance for 30 years, but with rising premiums and co-pays for his HIV medication, he was no longer able to afford it. He was able to obtain a subsidy through a third-party health company to afford the payments, but his health insurance would not accept it. After legal action, East, and others like him in Louisiana won the right to have third parties pay co-pays.
"My life was at stake," East says.
Although East found a solution, he worries about the future of healthcare for those with HIV.
"There's still a lot of stigma and untold stories out there and there's still a lot of work left to be done," he says.
With current changes to "Obamacare" looming with the new administration, the situation for those suffering with HIV could get even worse.
