Women In Focus

Personas de Pixan

"Personas de Pixan" explores the world of Mayan women in Guatemala, where machismo is prevalent and indigenous culture is being forgotten.

The Romero family has flourished over three generations with the support of Asociación de Mujeres de Altiplanos (AMA), a local non-for-profit organization in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala. Through the assistance and educational programs provided by AMA, the Romero women have been able to preserve their Mayan identities and lifestyle while taking advantage of fair work opportunities.

"To be a woman in Guatemala is to be fierce, strong, and brave, intelligent and free," says one of AMA's representatives.

Pixan stands for spirit and this documentary features the strong and perseverant spirit of the indigenous women of the Romero family and the leaders of AMA. For more information visit amaguate.org.
