Solar Ovens in Navajo Nation

A Navajo proverb states, "We do not inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." Raquel Redshirt lives within the Navajo Nation of New Mexico. Historically, there has been a lack of access to cooking fuels due to their remote location. To solve that problem, she studied solar ovens and created her own, using materials that are readily available in her community. Her innovative idea landed her a special award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. This is the story of how her innovative idea was born.
