Women In Focus

'Soles' of Sseko

Every shoe has a story.

In Kampala, Uganda, Sseko Designs began as a plan to generate income for high potential, talented young women so they could continue their education at a university level. Every woman who has graduated from Sseko is currently pursuing her college degree or has graduated from university, and the project continues. The women save a portion of their wages into a secure account, and upon readiness to enter university after an approximate nine-month period working, Sseko matches their savings so that the women are able to afford their studies. "When you're in the company, you find very many benefits," says one employee, Sylvia. "You get paid on time, which doesn't happen in very many companies (in Uganda.)"

Each product is signed by the Sseko employee who created it and customers can visit the company's website to read about that particular woman's story. Learn more about the company's mission, and additional jewelry, bags, and other handmade accessories here.
