Yakshagana Dancers Take Up Gender Rights - Breakthrough's Stories of Change
In this short film, young women in India (some of which are HIV positive) perform traditional Indian dances with a female empowered twist. Many of these traditional dances have always been performed by men wearing colorful makeup and costumes. However, these young women put their own stamp on their Yakshagana dance performing both male and female characters and rather than simulating some of the traditional folkoore in the dance that women need to be rescued by men, the female characters are self-sufficient. The young women also participate in other activities to build their self-esteem and gain self-confidence.
